Restaurant Red Alert: Inspector spots roach running across Cuban bread | News
Brandon, Florida- A popular Cuban Café is back open after state inspectors shut the restaurant down finding numerous critical health code violations last month.
Gordo's La Cubanita is located on West Lumsden where on March 27, state inspectors paid the restaurant a surprise visit and documented an alarming 16 critical violations.
Among the worst:
- Cut deli ham and raw eggs found stored at room temperature
- An employee not washing his hands
- A dirty ice chute coming out of the Coca Cola Machine
- Food debris built up on the meat slicer
"We had an empanada and my baby's dad said it was gross so we didn't finish it," said Toya Colbert, who we found leaving after lunch.
Despite her bad experience, she was shocked to hear about the restaurant's health safety violations also including an insect infestation.
The state documented live roaches throughout the kitchen including above the hand washing sink, inside the meat slicer, and one roach running across a piece of Cuban bread.
"I will never eat here again. EVER... Ever in life. You're making me sick," said a disgusted Colbert.
We stopped in and asked to see if some of La Cubanita's problems had been corrected, but were told the owner was not available.
We also asked to take a look at the restaurant's latest health inspection report, something all restaurants are required to have on hand, but were told we'd have to come back the following day.
"They wouldn't show it? I think that's horrible," said Colbert.
It's hard to tell what problems La Cubanita has corrected, leaving customers like Colbert with serious concerns.
"I hope we don't get sick because we just ate here, wow!"
